After multiple delays the Polish second division finally got underway even if there was only one match this weekend as German team Landshut travelled to Latvia to face Daugavpils.
The German team were without Martin Smolinski who said he is hoping to be back to full fitness for the team’s first home match. But nonetheless were always in this match, even if the hone team lead from the start.
Oleg Michailov (10+1) played an essential role for the home team and it was also great to see 40 year old Dane, Hans Andersen (9+1) back after an enforced year off due to no racing in Denmark or UK in 2020.
In the absence of Smolinski it was Kai Huckenbeck (14+1, in photo) who led the Devils. They needed two 1:5s to win the match in the nomination heats and Huckenbeck did his bit with two heat wins, thanks to clever use of the tactical reserve late in the match. But the home team did enough to hold off the later charge with 25 year old, Jewgienij Kostygow topping the home team with an impressive 11+2 (If you think you might remember the name it might because he represented Latvia in the 2017 U21 World Championships).
We will now have to wait to next weekend for the second and third matches in the league Poznań travel to Opole next Saturday and Rawicz host Rzeszow on Sunday.
