Bydgoszcz finally got to start their 2021 season with a home match against Tarnow tonight.

Their line up included Russian, Vadim Tarasiensko, Frenchman, David Bellego and Dane, Andreas Lyager alongside riders from the home nation. The visitors, on the other hand, start their third match with the third rider at number 1 following Iversen injury in the first match. In match 2 they tried to race with just 7 riders with no effect allowing Sweden’s Kim Nilsson his first start for 2021 alongside fellow Swede, Alexander Woentin.

And it was at the second time of asking in Heat 6 that Lyager (3) and Nilsson (1) finally took their first points of the season after both coming last in their opening heats.

There was drama in the reserve heat as home rider, Matuesz Blazykowski crashed out. Neither did he return to race heat 4 or 8 putting pressure on the teammates to win the heat. Fortunately for the hosts, Adrian Gala was up to the challenge in heat 4 and Lyager took Heat 8 as they both took 3 points in their respective heats.

Despite that, and the fact that the home team were racing their first match, by Heat 11 Bydgoszcz were on top with a 40-31 lead after two 5:1s thanks to Bellego/ Zengota (Heat 5) and Tarasiensko/ Gala (Heat 9).

Whilst it looked unlikely that they would slip up, any hope that Tarnow might steal a victory was firmly snuffed out in the last four heats as Bydgoszcz took the match by storm. The rounded off with 4 heat victories, including two 5:1s in the nomination heats. Therefore, they finished runaway winners by 54:35.

For the home they can go away pleased with their performance but for Tarnow their season has taken a worrying start with losing their top rider and losing three matches in a row. Rohan Tungate is keeping the team in matches but they cannot win with him alone. Was it frustration that got him excluded from Heat 13 when he appeared to kick Lyager (video) out of the heat? Will they do like Wilki Kronso and try to buy themselves out of trouble? Or will they just hope they can ride into form?
