There is a race against time in Leszno. From the season of 2022, linear drainage will be required at every PGE Ekstraliga stadium, and there is no such thing at the Byków facility yet. And although the need to install drainage has been talked about for a long time, now the councilors of Leszno are not convinced that one million zlotys should be allocated for this purpose. And it is the city – as the owner of the facility – that is to cover this costly investment. To make matters worse, the first tender has been canceled, which will delay the start of works at the stadium.

More than a million zlotys were allocated to the investment in Leszno’s budget and it was the hottest topic when discussing the city’s financial plans for 2022. Some councilors feel faced with a fait accompli, others point out that this is a necessary action for the Union to compete in PGE Ekstraliga.

– Three days before the session, a slot was made to the draft budget for 2022 entitled “stadium drainage”. We, as councilors, are now standing against the wall. On the one hand, we have raised the taxes of the residents and we will have PLN 1,600,000 from it, and now we are giving PLN 1,050,000 to the stadium. On the other hand – we know that this dehydration is necessary for Unia Leszno to be able to continue to participate in the extra-league speedway games – said Adriana Machowiak, councilor of the Civic Coalition, quoted by the portal leszno24.pl.

These words were answered by the president of the Union, Piotr Rusiecki, who emphasized that dehydration had been talked about for a long time and there could be no question of putting someone up against the wall. The helmsman of the Union also noticed that recently, in the context of the city, there has been talk of rather infamous things, such as a huge snowman in the city center or “mowing” of snow.
