The Gniezno v Łódź match in the EWINNER1 league was supposed to kick start the Polish speedway season. But the Coronavirus continues to influence everyday life, having already caused Grigori Laguta and Lublin’s start to the season to be delayed.

But today finally saw the two league’s start.

#RYBKRO

The two new arrivals to eWinner 1 met in the very first match of the Polish season. But last year’s runaway winners of league 2, Wilki Krosno, were given a rude awakening to life in the 1st division when they visited Rybnik. The hosts, who are looking to return to Ekstraliga they were dumped out of in 2020, started their campaign off perfectly with a 63:27 thrashing of the new arrivals. Their dominance can be shown that no less that three riders scored paid maximums – in Michael Jepsen Jensen (14+1), Kacper Gomolski (13+2), Sergei Logaszow (12+3).

#TORZIE
In the Ekstraliga newly promoted Toruń, who have swopped places with Rybnik, put in a commanding performance at home against Zielona Gora.

All 7 riders put in a superb performance with the Holder brothers putting up 10+2 (Jack) and 10 (Chris) and the Polish pairing of Pawel Przedpelski (11+1) and Adrian Miedzinski (9+2) racing at the top end of their game.

Zielona Gora gave up two 5:1s in the first four heats and never look likely to recover. They will need Matej Zagar (4+1) to remember he is not longer on winter holiday if they are not to be in League 1 in 2022.

However, Max Fricke looked back to his best form from the 2019 season with 13+1 from six riders, whilst Patryk Dudek also shone with 13.
But the club simply could not compete with the newly promoted team’s firepower and went down 51:39 by the time heat 15 was over.

#LESGOR

In the day’s last game Gorzow were clearly out for revenge from last year’s final defeat to hosts and perennial favourites, Leszno.

And three 2:4 victories in the first four heats gave the determined visitors a six point lead and left Leszno chasing the game from the get go.

When Emil Sayfutdinov replace the struggling U21 World Champion, Jaimon Lidsey, as a tactical replacement in Heat 10, the home team took a 5:1 that brought them within 3 points.

But they never came closer than that as Bartosz Zmarzlik took a near perfect 14 points and SGP rider Martin Vaculik collected 10+1 for Gorzow. They were ably supported by Andrew Thomsen (7), Szymon Wozniak (6) and reserve Kamil Nowacki (5+1). The Polish Junior only had his 21st birthday last Monday.

Leszno’s SGP riders Jason Doyle (14+1) and Sayfutdinov (12+2) played their role. But sadly Jaimon Lidsey (1) failed to find the form he had in 2020 and 18 year old reserve Krzysztof Sadurski (0) were ultimately the difference between the two teams.

It is the first time Leszno have lost at home in 30 outings – that is since 2017. Are we witnessing the end of an era or just a momentary slip? Only time will tell…
